Odessa had her own litter of 11 on April 16 of which, sadly 2 were stillborn. Another baby passed a few days later, leaving her with 8 wonderful babies, 3 boys and 5 girls. All eight, knock wood, seem to be doing well at a week of age. Odessa is also fostering the lone survivor of her sister Sisuetta's ill fated litter and lone survivor of a totally unrelated doe named Jaya who lives in Vancouver, BC. If any of these little ones don't make it, it will not be for lack of Dess's mothering skills. She's been a complete trouper through all of this. I didn't think it was possible to love her more than I already did but watching her go to bat for these babies makes me just want to hold her and never let her go. She'll settle for me feeding her as much chicken and Boost as seems nutritionally safe.
Here are photos of the babies taken at various ages to show development. Both Odessa and Sisuetta's babies were born on April 16 and Jaya's were born April 14. I used non-toxic marker to color code the babies before they grew in hair so as to determine which was from which mother. A friend is studying the group for a paper on animal behavior so knowing who was who is very important for the project.
Colors for Odessa's babies are all my best guess. Their father has some funky dilution genes that don't manifest their color for several weeks.
