Agouti American Irish

Neueratte means "new rat" in German. It will come as no surprise that my husband Wilhelm named this girl. If it's a weird German name, you can blame it on the resident weird German. Neue (pronounced "noy-uh") came to us from a large scale rescue from an unfortunate hoarding situation in western Washington. Neue was born as a free range domestic rat in a house that had become overrun with domestic rats allowed to roam and breed freely. She had never been handled by a human before being trapped out of the house and is, essentially, quite similar to having a feral barn cat as a pet. She's responding very well to handling and living in a cage with companions in our living room. She's one of the four who live upstairs so she can get maximum attention and exposure to life in a human household. Though not overly fond of it, Neue will allow herself to be caught and held and is becoming quite proficient at extracting treats from her people. Though a bit hesitant at first to try new foods, she's now as big a chowhound for table treats as the rest of her cagemates. Neue is a very beautiful rat, with tawny agouti fur and a lovely white belly. She's also, knock wood, been very healthy so far and we suspect she's on the younger side of adulthood so hopefully we'll have our little Neue around for many years, though we'll have to change her name to Alteratte (old rat.)
