Beauty
and the Beast
Nell gave birth on October 3, just in time for Rosh Hashanah, the beginning
of the new year in the Jewish calendar. She had a very easy delivery and is
now the proud mother of three little girls and four little boys. I expect all
will be agouti like mom. Nell is just stuffing them with milk and appears to
dote on them completely. Nell is a very gentle mother with both her babies
and with me - she's totally fine with me handling them and her. Nell is just
the perfect rat mom in every way so far. Since these precious seven were born
on such an auspicious occasion, I turned to my dear friend from waaaay back
in
my college
days, David
Kominsky, who is a rabbi and scholar
of Jewish mysticism and his lovely and equally knowledgeable wife Eva Schweber,
to help me name these treasures. They suggested naming them for the seven lower
Sephirot, aspects of God, who are united into one on this holiday. The ladies
will be Gevurah (strength), Tiferat (beauty) and Shechina (a feminine aspect
of God.) The fellows will be Chesed (mercy and loving kindness), Netzach (eternity),
Hod (majesty) and Yesod (the masculine aspect of God.) This is a bit of a mystical
departure from my usual whimsical baby naming scheme, but I figured that if
fate would have it that they would be born on such an auspicious day, I needed
to commemorate
it a bit.
Three lovely boys are still seeking homes as their original adoption fell through.

Netzach loves to run on his wheel and to play with his brothers and his "uncles" Sampson, Beasley and Butter Bean. He's also quite up for a cuddle once he burns off his little boy energy in his wheel.

Hod is so full of personality - this guy just jumps at the cage door when you come near it. He's very energetic and playful and is quite the adorable little imp.

Chesed is the gentlest of the boys and is a tiny bit shy still, compared to his VERY outgoing brothers. He's the thinkin' fella of the three and enjoys a cuddle and a head scratch very much.
