The Lovely Luau
These adorable babies were born on May 31. I have nicknamed them the E.A.P.eRs, which stands for Extreme Awesome Party Rats. Seriously, I have so few photos of them because most of the shots are either of their hindquarters scurrying away, are motion blurred or are aborted in mid snap because I'm scrambling to keep them from leaping off the futon into space. These are not rats who feel bounded at all by the laws of physics. I will shortly be installing a baby sized wheel in their cage to hopefully siphon off some of their energy. In addition to running around like mad fools, they all enjoy crashing in the hammock and close finger examination. All fingers must be tasted, and then tasted again 20 seconds later in case their flavor has changed. You will never be bored with one of these little monkeys as a pet. They definitely take after mom at this stage, as dad is the king of Mellowtown. Mom is a total party girl and champion wheel runner, cagemate bosser and hand pouncer. All the babies were named for traditional Hawaiian luau foods. E'ai ka-kou! (Bon appetit!)
On a sad note, we lost little Kalua to a terrible freak accident when she was nearly 3 weeks old. She was a dear little soul and is very much missed.

ROUS Kulolo • Cream? rex dumbo • Hold Kulolo is a yummy pudding. Miss Kulolo Rat is also quite yummy and a funky color. She may develop pale markings over the next couple of weeks, like her maternal grandfather's litter did, so I will be keeping an eye on her and her two other pale siblings. |
ROUS Lomi Lomi • Cream? rex • Available Lomi Lomi Salmon is a tasty dish indeed - the words "lomi lomi" translate into "to knead or rub." Our Lomi Lomi Ratty loves to be kneaded and rubbed, especially when you do that gently to her adorable little deerlike ears. |

ROUS Poi • Lilac variegated blazed rex dumbo • Reserved Poi is a paste made from taro root and, frankly, is not my favorite Hawaiian food. Poi the Rat, however, is definitely a favorite here and will be staying on permanently. She was the littlest of litter by a small margin but has completely caught up in size and development, just like her great aunt Grasshopper, who she resembles. |
ROUS Poke • Black hooded rex dumbo • Reserved David Cruthers Ahi Poke (pronounced Poh-kay) is a delicious diced raw tuna dish and one of this household's favorite Hawaiian foods. Ratti Poke is also a serious favorite around here as well. She's definitely one of the most spirited of this bunch of seriously energetic babies. |

ROUS Lau Lau • Cream? rex • Available Lau Lau is kind of the equivalent of Hawaiian tamales - a leaf wrapped bundle of serious goodness. Lau Lau the rat is also a bundle of goodness, but he's completely not serious - this little dude is silly and very playful. |
ROUS Musubi • Lilac split cap possum • Reserved for CWR Spam Musubi is a dish that may take some getting used to for many. It's basically spam sushi - a nice big hunk of spam on top of rice, wrapped with nori (seaweed.) It really does taste better than it sounds. Rat Musubi, on the other hand, is just as yummy as he looks. |
