Edda and Edgar became parents on September 8 to 10 pink squeakers one of whom, alas, was stillborn. We lost two more babies in the next 2 weeks to respiratory problems and I started to worry. I had blood drawn from other rats in my rattery and an ELISA test was performed to see if there were any viral problems going on. Our tests came back negative for everything but myco, which all rats outside of labs have. Edda and Fenrir, who were both sneezing, were put on Baytril to combat anything bacterial. Both have been responding beautifully to treatments. The remaining babies, aside from Fenrir, have not so much as sniffled throughout it all. By the time they are ready to leave, the course of Baytril should be well over and anything bacterial should be over. Cages have been scrubbed well with bleach to eliminate anything sticking around in the environment. Fenrir is smaller than any of the others and will be staying so I can monitor his health (plus we've bonded pretty heavily over his illness.)
The babies are all named for Nordic gods of the Aesir and related realms. Edda herself was named for the famous Icelandic saga poem, The Edda and Edgar Rat Burrows' name is, of course, a play on the writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, who wrote the Tarzan stories. I figured the Aesir was a realm that would suit both names and, as all rat folks know, rats do expect to be treated like little furry gods and goddesses!
