The Lovely Luau

Say "aloha" to some great ratties! Princess Makalani and Elliott both count our royal family in their lineage, so this is quite the awaited litter. Babies will be named for delicious hawaiian foods and drinks. Princess Makalani, Maka to her friends, is a real spitfire doe. She's whip smart and always on the go and definitely the boss of her cage. Her personality is very strong but also sweet - she loves people and is extremely loyal to her cagemates. She helped nurse our dear old Lorelai when she was in the end stages of cancer. Maka has mellowed with age but is still a great deal of fun. Elliott pretty much is the ratty embodiment of the mellow surfer dude - he's Keanu Reeves with a long pink tail. Both rats are variations of mink - and both have fabulous dalmatian markings. Maka delivered 11 babies on May 31 but sadly lost 4 within the first day. The other 7, two boys and five girls, are fantastic, healthy, wild little baby hooligans. Their photos can be seen at their page.

Litters in the Works

A Walking Tour of England

This is our first roan litter at ROUS and I'm very excited! Believe it or not, Pippa is a blue blazed rat, with markings similar to Alfie's. Also, believe it or not, Alfie started out life as a richly colored agouti. Roans are a fascinating type of rat recently imported into North America from Europe. These rats start out life looking like blazed berkshires and slowly fade out to white as they age. Alfie is a Best of Show winning rat with great good looks, terrific roaning and the sweetest, most outgoing personality. In addition to his continental ancestors, he's also been bred into some of my favorite lines here in the US. Pippa is a total love maniac - she has to launch herself into space to get to you when you open the cage door. She's a petite, sleek little girl with very soft velveteen fur. Unlike most of our American blues, the blue roans have pink eyes to go with their blue fur, which is kind of a neat combo. I expect black, agouti, blue and blue agouti babies, all roan, half velveteen, all standar ear. This pair is currently honeymooning, with babies expected in mid-July. All babies will be named for historic counties in England.

The Odd-Eyed Couple

If you like blazes, minks and odd-eyes, this is the litter for you! Tycho is an outstanding show rat and an absolutely fabulous pet - he's mellow, friendly and has a sweet playful side that comes out with his buddies. Elowen has the calmness of her father, a rare and lovely trait in a doe, and is so pretty. I am very excited about this litter! I expect minks, lilacs, havanas and maybe other color surprises, all in highly marked dalmatian. Half should be rex and half dumbo. I expect to get at least a couple of nicely odd-eyed babies in the litter given Tycho's really good odd-eyes and Elowen's lineage. This couple is currently honeymooning. Babies will be paired up and given names of famous duos, though, of course, they can be adopted with different siblings than their name partner.

Featured "Recycled" Rats at Little Mischief Rescue

Joey and Cupid

Joey is a gorgeous blazed siamese boy and Cupid is a little fawn hooded darling. Both boys are young males in good health and are said to be a bit shy from lack of handling but are coming around with lots of treats and TLC. Cupid was neutered at home by his former owner but has healed nicely from that ordeal. If you are interested in learning more about these handsome lads or any of the other fine rescue rats up for adoption at Little Mischief, please email Simone. Ratty transport trains can be arranged to get these and other rats in foster care to Washington and Oregon.

Future Litters

Here are the vague and very changeable ROUS breeding plans for the rest of the year. Pairings are extremely subject to change due to health of the potential parents or their close relatives, time constraints on my part and demand for litters. I will update this with new plans and schedules over the next week or so, as I have time for updates.

Our Adoption Policy

We sell our rats both as pets and to quality breeders that we have screened first. We generally sell our rats in pairs, unless you already have one or two rats to be companions to our babies. Rats generally are much happier when kept with others of their kind and we don't want any of our babies ever to be lonely or bored. We also require that you have a decent cage, proper bedding material and food ready for your babies before pick up. Please check out our Wise Sages page for links to websites covering proper care and keeping of pet rats if these are your first pet rats. We also are on hand to ask questions if you are new to the fancy - we love spreading the joy of proper ratkeeping. If, for any reason, you find that you cannot keep a rat we have sold you, please contact us and we will take back the rat - once a member of the ROUS family, always a member. We also ask you to provide contact information with each adoption so we can check in and see how you and our babies are getting along. Every ROUS baby is special to us and we love to hear how they are doing (pictures are also greatly appreciated!) We will also require new owners to sign a contract agreeing to the above policies with every adoption.
